For Leia

Now, I know that names are a completely personal thing. You may love something that I think is totally absurd. That's just how it goes.

But can't we come to some kind of collective understanding? That some names are just unacceptable? Like, for example, the high school kid named Dam'n (pronounced Damon). Funny, parents, very funny.

Here are a few of the names I saw last week, categorized as well as I could categorize them ... meaning, many of them fit in more than one category. See for yourself.

Attack of the Ys:
Jadynn
Randyn
Sharyse
Aydrianna
Bryne
Rylan
Caydon
Shaylei
Grayci
Kamryn
Bryony
Jerysa
Kaylum
Taiya
Coyt

Names I think I know, but spelled so wrong I'm not sure:
Macee
Makayela
Jocilyn
Landyn
Kelci
Kenadie
Lexxee
Myka
Ostyn

Haven't heard/seen this before, were your parents going for "unique"?
Castin
Questen
Drevan
Quade
Treven
Cashten
Raiden
Galven
Serenaty
Meradee
Haygen
Genika
Jerret
Jate

I have no clue what this is and I'm afraid to read it out loud*:
Koufax
Beanden
Leighan
Aaralyn
Neva
Taelarose
Cyler
Kieran
Jaevan
Kiya
Zhaylil
Rahannon
Jaly
Delci
Ela Dion
Nevaeh
Amonnie
Denile
Cragun
Nika
* I tried to keep the ethnic names off this list

I did not make any of these up.

Discuss.

  1. Remember you do live in Roosevelt my dear. And the people out there have thier own language (or lack of). Do you really expect anything different from the Basin???

  2. I can't ... for the ... I give up.

Have to say probably my favorite is Serenity spelled with an A. Oh, and I knew that Dam'n kid when he was a little guy. I called him Damn. I'm sorry, but it had to be done.

  3. Yeah, my kids are getting normal names. Not too normal, but very traditional and easy to spell. Too bad all those parents ruined what could have been an easy life for them of not having to spell their name to everybody.

  4. I have heard the name Nevaeh before - it's heaven backwards. Really spiffy if you ask me (eh hmm...sarcasm).

I don't understand why parents think that they need to give their kids ridiculous names and/or names that no one in their right mind will be able to spell. Dam'n. Come on, does it hurt your soul that much to put another vowel in there instead of an apostrophe?

I have read studies of children who had odd names who grew up to be...well... the type of person that no parent wants their child to hang around. Next think you know people will be putting three's and sevens in place of e's and t's in the alphabet. get a life, parents.

  6. So I'm laughing through your post because I know most of these kids from subbing for my dad. I think you're missing one of the funniest parts about Dam'n though. His full name is "Dam'n Hill" if you say it too fast you've got two great words on your hands! Trust me I've had this discussion with people after he was in the class I subbed.

  7. My mom teaches near the ghetto, and there was one student she had named La-a. That's not the worst part either. That's pronounced Ladasha. Scary.

  9. Um - wow.
First of all, sorry I just now am seeing this post. I've been ill, so my blogging world has been neglected.
Lexxeee?? That has got to be the worst thing I've ever seen. It looks like typos - multiple ones. Ick.
I hate the "Y" trend. Let's just throws "y"s around! Are they consonants? Are they vowels? We don't know! Therefore, they can go wherever we want them to!
All of those names are unbelievable. My children will have normal, real names.

  11. To be fair, Kieran's actually a quite popular name, and quite old.

It's pronounced Keer-an. My best friend's named Kieran, actually.
